- At around 4 a.m. on Sunday, March 22nd, 1998,

00:00:07
at the Governor Square Department Complex in Columbus, Ohio,

00:00:10
a neighbor is woken by loud banging

00:00:13
and the terrifying sound of a woman screaming.

00:00:27
This is episode three.

00:00:55
The disappearance.

00:00:56
The neighbor realizes the sound is coming

00:01:01
from Stacey Colbert's apartment.

00:01:03
What happens next will shock you and infuriate you.

00:01:08
The neighbor does nothing.

00:01:11
Despite having his ear to the floor to get a closer listen,

00:01:16
which is what he eventually tells detectives,

00:01:19
he doesn't call the police or go check and see

00:01:21
if Stacey is okay during that time.

00:01:24
The neighbor does eventually go and knock on Stacey's door

00:01:27
to check in, but not until 2 p.m. that afternoon.

00:01:31
10 hours after he initially hears her screams.

00:01:35
He notices Stacey's cat sitting outside her door,

00:01:39
but of course, there was no answer.

00:01:41
This should have been a huge red flag

00:01:44
that something was wrong.

00:01:46
Stacey loved her cat boots

00:01:49
and would never let him outside

00:01:50
because she lived by a busy main road.

00:01:53
There was so much speculation surrounding Stacey's neighbor

00:01:57
and why he wouldn't contact the police

00:01:59
when he initially heard the loud banging and Stacey screaming.

00:02:03
Some speculate he feared getting involved

00:02:08
maybe due to his own run-ins with the law.

00:02:10
Others speculate that maybe he had something

00:02:12
to do with Stacey's disappearance

00:02:15
and that's why he never notified the police.

00:02:17
But again, this is all speculation.

00:02:21
Unfortunately, that neighbor is now deceased

00:02:24
and cannot provide those answers.

00:02:26
However, the police did interview him on several occasions

00:02:30
and he was cleared as a potential suspect.

00:02:33
This is a large piece of the puzzle in this case

00:02:38
and not only is it an important piece,

00:02:41
but it's also one that I really struggle to comprehend.

00:02:44
How do you witness something like that and stay stagnant?

00:02:50
You know a young woman lives alone in that apartment

00:02:53
and you witnessed what may have been her final screams.

00:02:57
The what if's continue to haunt me

00:02:59
as I know they haunt Stacey's friends and family.

00:03:02
What if the neighbor called the police

00:03:06
or even went to check on Stacey right away?

00:03:09
Would the outcome have been different?

00:03:11
Would she still be here today?

00:03:14
Unfortunately, we'll never know the answers

00:03:17
to those burning questions.

00:03:20
Another day goes by

00:03:22
and it isn't until that Monday, March 23rd, 1998

00:03:26
that Stacey's sister Danielle calls her at 9 p.m.

00:03:30
You see, the Academy Awards were on

00:03:32
and the movie Titanic was nominated for quite a few awards.

00:03:36
Titanic was a favorite of Stacey and Danielle's.

00:03:40
Danielle took Stacey to see it for her 23rd birthday,

00:03:43
so it was special.

00:03:44
When Danielle got Stacey's voicemail,

00:03:47
she didn't think too much of it.

00:03:49
Back in 1998, no one had cell phones like we do now.

00:03:54
You called people on landlines and left voicemails

00:03:56
to get in touch with them if they didn't answer.

00:03:59
Danielle knew Stacey had a work trip that week

00:04:01
and assumed she was away

00:04:03
and would get back to her when she returned home.

00:04:05
Unfortunately, that would never happen.

00:04:08
The next day on Tuesday, March 24th, 1998,

00:04:13
Danielle receives a call from AEP

00:04:15
stating that Stacey has not been to work Monday or Tuesday.

00:04:19
Danielle immediately knew something was very wrong.

00:04:24
On Tuesday when I got home from work

00:04:28
is when I got the voicemail from her work.

00:04:31
And as soon as I received it,

00:04:36
I knew that it was bad.

00:04:40
Because she would never,

00:04:42
she's not the kind of person who would miss work.

00:04:45
She was probably one of the hardest workers

00:04:49
that I'd ever met in my life.

00:04:51
She had incredible work ethic.

00:04:53
She was very driven.

00:04:55
And she wanted to do things right.

00:04:58
She always wanted to do things right

00:04:59
and 110% over what anyone would expect her to do.

00:05:04
And so she wanted to get to work before everybody else.

00:05:11
She's probably one of the last people to leave work

00:05:14
and go above and beyond there.

00:05:18
So we got that call.

00:05:21
I got off of work.

00:05:23
It was probably around 4:30 or 5 o'clock.

00:05:28
Shortly after the call,

00:05:30
Danielle notifies her parents of what's going on

00:05:32
and tells them that she's going to drive over

00:05:34
to Stacey's apartment.

00:05:36
I called my parents and I said,

00:05:39
I'm going over to Stacey's apartment.

00:05:41
I think something's really, really wrong.

00:05:46
So I went over, at that point,

00:05:49
I even debated calling the police before I went over there

00:05:52
because I just couldn't imagine a world

00:05:55
in which she wouldn't go to work.

00:05:57
And so I jumped in my car and zoomed down to her apartment,

00:06:02
which again was only 2.1 miles door to door.

00:06:05
So I got to her apartment and her car was there.

00:06:10
Her door was slightly open.

00:06:14
And I don't remember when I saw it,

00:06:17
but there was a poster of somebody with her cat,

00:06:22
like it was a missing cat flyer that was out.

00:06:25
And I didn't happen to notice it at the time,

00:06:28
but it was up at that point.

00:06:31
And I went into the apartment.

00:06:33
This is small, little apartment.

00:06:35
You know, I go in and, you know,

00:06:37
I see her contacts are there.

00:06:39
I see her wallet's there.

00:06:41
I see, you know, all of her credit cards are cars there.

00:06:45
I see her purse there.

00:06:47
I see things like food and milk on the counter.

00:06:51
I see the refrigerator door is open.

00:06:55
I see cabinets that are open.

00:06:57
And, you know, I see blankets and her room is a little bit messy

00:07:06
with clothes and things on the floor.

00:07:08
I knew there was a problem.

00:07:12
I called the police.

00:07:13
They came over and this is Tuesday.

00:07:15
And I don't believe I left her a place until probably

00:07:20
one or two o'clock in the morning.

00:07:22
The initial street cops came over and did a run through

00:07:28
over the house.

00:07:30
Even from that first night, I was speaking

00:07:34
to the detectives in charge of like rape and I think I

00:07:40
talked to even the homicide guys that night and telling,

00:07:44
you know, what I knew.

00:07:46
I called my uncle

00:07:51
He came over and he brought his son, he's a fireman.

00:07:57
And they, after looking at the apartment,

00:08:02
they definitely suspected it wasn't just run away or things

00:08:08
like that.

00:08:09
They, they suspected foul play right away.

00:08:12
As Danielle mentioned, police immediately suspected foul play

00:08:16
after investigating the condition of Stacey's apartment.

00:08:20
So let's review the facts and the evidence presented here.

00:08:24
Stacey's car is found in the parking lot of the complex.

00:08:27
All of Stacey's personal belongings are still in the apartment,

00:08:30
including her purse, wallet, and car keys.

00:08:35
Her front door was slightly open and there

00:08:37
was a boot print on the inside of the door.

00:08:40
Her refrigerator was open and the box of half

00:08:43
uneaten breadsticks was on the counter along with a gallon of milk.

00:08:48
There was also a strong smell of bleach present in the apartment.

00:08:52
All the evidence told a story, a very disturbing story.

00:08:59
But Stacey was still nowhere to be found.

00:09:03
As the search for Stacey continued, her family, friends,

00:09:06
and colleagues went to massive lengths to spread the word

00:09:09
and focus on bringing her home.

00:09:11
While detectives on her case continued

00:09:13
to investigate and track down any leads they came across.

00:09:17
AEP was also very active in the search

00:09:20
and even put up a $10 reward for information

00:09:23
leading to the location of Stacey.

00:09:26
Little did everyone know this was only

00:09:29
the beginning of what would be a six-year-long search.

00:09:33
And the details of the investigation

00:09:35
would leave everyone in a tailspin.

00:09:38
In the next episode, we dive into the aftermath

00:09:40
of Stacey's disappearance and discover new leads.

00:09:44
Episode four, The Vigil, is available right now.
